Abolish the "Get Set" stage of our traffic lights, leaving Red (On your marks) and Green (Go!) operative only. Amber will only light to signal the lights are changing to red.

Why the contribution is important

This increases road safety, and stops those idiots from gambling by starting to pull away at Red & Amber whilst other idiots are speeding through at solid amber from another direction.

Hmm. I find the appearance of the amber light adjusts my behaviour coming up to the light. I agree the system is abused by some but I reckon it helps the majority.

Red-and-amber is found in a few of the more civilized countries (e.g., Switzerland, but not France). It means the driver can relax during red, and get ready during red-and-amber. Keep it.

It would cost quite a lot of money to re-programme every set of traffic lights in the country.

You'd need to show a clear and definite advantage in doing so, and I don't think you've done that.

Apart from anything else, I find it hard to believe that any traffic lights simultaneously show amber one way and red/amber the other. Have you actually checked that this is the case?

Those idiots you mention will run red lights just as easily as red/amber.

When the lights are red, I put the gear to neutral and apply the handbrake.
This way I do not dazzle the driver behind me.
Dazzling the driver behind me constitutes driving without consideration for other road usrs.

If the red and amber phase were withdrawn, drivers would keep their vehicle in gear, with one foot on the clutch and one foot on the brake pedal. Not a good idea.

Red and amber allows the driver to prepare the vehicle to move - look around and assess the junction, change into gear, remove handbrake, raise the revs etc.

Please legislate for the responsible majority such as myself who find the red and amber phase useful and not for the few who may proceed unsafely at this stage.

Having just been in France where there is no red and amber before green I feel that abolishing the red and amber phase would be entirely retrograde.

@jcoles2 - They don't have "red and amber" in Switzerland.

Why not abolish the green, except for lane control, have the light flashing amber allthe time and then to steady amber when changing to red. Then the red and amber and back to flashing amber. Simples and cut a third of emmissions and cost of running the lights and manufacturing them.

There has to be a pause between red and green to give approaching motorists time to slow down and stop. Your suggestion would result in more collisions.

What a stupid idea. The Amber is a deliberate pause see year1's post.
